| Mt. Elbert Climb (14,433 ft) |
This was the first peak that Lisa and I ever tried to climb. At the time, we knew little about 14er climbing, and ended up turning back around 12,000 feet because there was simply too much snow on the mountain (late May, 2003). My friend Lonny and I decided to summit this one in early October. This time, I came far more prepared than before, hauling snowshoes and the necessary storm gear, which thankfully came in handy. When we started, it was about 40 degrees outside, and as we ascended it got cooler. Then, a nice snowstorm decided to come our way, and sit over top of us for about an hour as we climbed (dropping probably about 3-4 inches on us). We finally hit the summit after slogging through up to two feet of snow in spots and found a far better way to descend the trecherous snowy slopes than snow shoes could afford us (see the videos). Either way, the view from the top of the highest point in Colorado was truly spectacular - made even better by the snow topped peaks surrounding us! -- Brian |
