Climbing Torreys Peak (14,267 ft)

In July 2003, Lisa and I managed to climb our first "14er" (mountain over 14,000 feet above sea level). We chose Grays Peak, because it is commonly known as one of the easiest 14ers to do in the Front Range area. Grays Peak (14,270 ft summit) is a short distance from Torreys Peak (14,267 ft summit), separated by a saddle between them of approximately 600 feet (an aside: in order for a peak to be considered a true mountain, the saddle between it and an adjacent mountain must be greater than 300 feet).

As a start to the '04 hiking season, we decided to head up Torreys Peak. Mostly, this followed the same trail as to Grays, except it split off near a snowfield below the saddle. For amusement, simply check out the Grays Peak Hike Photos from last year, and you'll see a strong similarity -- with one major exception. This year, the weather was pretty lousy for photographs. Our summit panorama consisted of white and snow. Oh well, it was still a fun hike!
